When, in the early 1970s, he started performing in concerts and recitals, he felt a little awkward because he didn't know how to present himself, how to hold his hands during the performance.

One day he decided to step on the scene with a large white handkerchief: holding it in his hand made him feeling comfortable, displaying a more relaxed attitude.

That little gimmick worked so well that Pavarotti never performed without the handkerchief any longer, till the very last show of his career.
