Spring (Springtime) (1933/1934) by Vilhelms PurvītisLatvian National Museum of Art
The artist
In the 1920s-30s, Vilhelms Purvītis was considered to be one of the busiest artists in Latvia since, in addition to being an active painter, he was the rector of the Art Academy of Latvia and the director of the Riga City Museum of Art.
The special artwork
This work is special in Purvītis' oeuvre, since he rarely used the motif of a garden in bloom, preferring winter and early spring views.
Characteristic
The work brings together Purvītis' characteristic considered method of landscape construction with an impressionistic play of colour, for which he employs looser brushstrokes and bright colours.
Details
The topography has been built very laconically, using a rhythmic structure of slender brushstrokes, while the harmony of grey-pink, violet and green colours imbues the landscape with a unique decorative quality without questioning the facts of nature.
Different trees
It can be seen that the artist knew and very accurately perceived the different tinges of the blossoming of the different tree species and varieties.
Colour nuances
Corresponding to these nuances of white, there is either a warm grey.
A cooler violet-grey or a pink layer in the crowns of the trees on which the artist later, as though in play, has softly scattered white touches with the brush, creating an impression of abundant spring bloom.
Pedantic order
Purvītis maintained pedantic order and if he nevertheless did not clear these accidental spots, it can be assumed that, to his mind, they at minimum did not harm the image of spring created in the painting.
