Nicole Dambreville owns a cabaret in Saint-Leu, a fishing port on the west coast. Since the Covid crisis, Nicole no longer has employees. She takes on all the roles: cooking, reception, management, bookings, service... Although it is an intense rhythm, she makes sure to carry out the concept as she had always dreamed of it: "I realise that I really belong here. If I had to do it all over again, I would do exactly the same.”

The Reunion Island offers a real melting pot of cultures in terms of languages, religions and traditions. This heritage has also influenced performing arts, from the traditional Mayola which combines music, song and dance, to contemporary theatrical creations.

On stage
“On the island, "making your kari" means cooking things your own way. For me, it involves mixing the Reunionese cuisine with the artistic side" explains Nicole. To combine both aspects, she opened the Marg'Oz in January 2020.

Nicole comes from a performing arts background and opening her own cabaret had been on her mind for several years. For her, the mission of an artist is to convey emotions and love to people. Initially, she did the show herself every weekend.
Today, she also opens her stage to other artists from the Reunion Island. Spectators enjoy seeing them perform on a more intimate setting - and no two evenings are alike. Her shows feature timeless French songs, such as Édith Piaf's repertoire, but also situations specific to the island or even messages relating to current events.

From the wooden interiors to the vintage armchairs, everything was done to create a warm atmosphere. And because it’s all about creating an exchange with the public, the evenings always have a stand-up comedy feel.

En cuisine
The cabaret owes its name to the “margoze”, a local vegetable. Dishes are served that bring back to life old recipes, always cooked with fresh, seasonal vegetables.

Whether on stage or on the menu, Nicole only wants to give the best to the people. "I often tell myself when I'm in front of my pots and pans that it's not my job at all. That makes me laugh!”

She gets inspired by world cuisine revisited with a Reunionese sauce, and experiments with traditional Creole dishes. "People are often quite surprised by what I can offer and it's a real pleasure". She already has some regulars coming once or twice a month.
