Dubai’s skyline is a striking juxtaposition of traditional and modern, and this duality is mirrored in its artistic expressions. Two prominent examples are Aya by Mattar bin Lahej and Declaration by eL Seed.

Modern Love

Declaration by eL seed is a confession of love to Arabic calligraphy from the French-Tunisian artist. Located at the Dubai Opera, the bright pink 3D letters are a modern interpretation of traditional calligraphy.

The sculpture is of a quote by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai: “Art in all its colours and types reflects the culture of the nations, their history and civilization”.

EL Seed chose this quote as a declaration of love and gratitude to the city of Dubai, the city that he calls home.

Honoring Emirati Heritage

In his calligraphy-inspired sculpture 'Aya', Mattar Bin Lahej merges Emirati tradition with modern sculptural techniques, creating a visually stunning piece that captures the essence of his home country's culture.

The stainless steel letters of 'Aya' reflect sunlight and water, creating a dynamic and ever-changing visual experience against the stark black background. The words appear to dance and shift where they stand in the heart of City Walk 2 by Meraas, engaging passersby and viewers.
