Château du Rivau
Found in Lémeré in the Touraine region of France, the Château du Rivau dates to 1445. Its fairytale features and notable place in French history make it one of the most recognisable castles in the country.

Le Rivau was the possession of the Beauvau family, who were allied to the royal family through the marriage of Isabeau de Beauvau to Jean II de Bourbon in 1454. The château remained in the family's possession for 247 years.

As this drawbridge and the mighty square tower shows, Le Riveau began as a medieval fortress. It was later expanded by succeeding generations, and transformed into a luxurious family home, perfect for entertaining guests.

The interior of the château recalls its medieval and renaissance history, and contains many original features such as Italian and Flemish frescoes, arms and hunting trophies, and ornate carved fireplaces

The 12 gardens of Rivau are designated Jardin Remarquable by the French Ministry of Culture and the Comité des Parcs et Jardins de France. The chateau's rose conservatory alone boasts an impressive 450 varieties.

The château continues along the path of its renaissance founders by commissioning art for its grounds. Throughout the gardens are works by Fabien Verschaere, Cat Loray, Jerôme Basserode, Frans Krajcberg, and Philippe Ramette.

The chateau also produces its own Chinon wine. This traditional style comes in soft, dry, whites made from Chenin blanc grapes, while the light, fresh rosés and reds are from Cabernet Franc. Top off your visit with a quick trip to the castle winery.
