The epic poem: La Henriade
"The poem La Henriade has a controversial history. The young François-Marie Arouet, Voltaire (1694-1778), a notable figure of the French Enlightenment, was imprisoned in the Bastille on May 16, 1717."
"While in prison, he composed the first two cantos of the epic poem La Henriade, the first version of which was called La Ligue (1723). The book was a critique of the religious extremism embodied in the character of Henry IV (1553-1610)."
"The story presented in the poem takes place between 1588 and 1594, beginning with the Siege of Paris led by Henry III and his brother-in-law, the Protestant Henry Bourbon, King of Navarre. The former was born in 1551, the son of Henry II and Catherine di Medici, and came to rule France in 1574. Paris was one of the strongholds of the Catholic or Holy League, formed in opposition to the Protestant Union."

"Its publication, under the definitive title of La Henriade, was only possible after Voltaire was set free and took place in London in 1728."
MAGALHÃES, P. A. I.
"It wasn't possible to publish it in France, as the author had many opponents in his home country, such as the nobleman Guy-Auguste de Rohan, Count of Chabot."

SALLES, Antonio. Aves de Arribação[novela cearense]. Lisboa: Typographia “A Editora Limitada”, Largo do Conde Barão, 50, 1914.
From newspaper to book...
Aves de arribação is an important example of literature moving from the pages of the newspaper to the pages of the book. Aves de arribação (Birds of Prey) was first published in the Rio de Janeiro newspaper Correio da Manhã in 1902.
... into book form.
In book form, the text would only be published in Portugal in 1914.
Dedication [printed] to Rodolpho Theophilo.
Rodolfo Teófilo [1853-1932] and Antônio Sales [1868-1940] were founding members of the Ceará literary movement known as the Padaria Espiritual.
It was in 1892, at the Café Java, that the movement was born with avant-garde intentions: art as an expression of irony and humorous political criticism.
"I wrote this novella many years ago and had it published as a pamphlet in the Correio da Manhã in Rio. Since then I've never reread it, except now when, encouraged by some friends, I decided to publish it as a volume. From reading it, I realized that there was a lot I wanted to change in it, but I preferred to let it appear as it did in the newspaper, except for very slight corrections."
A. S.
"Critics will certainly find in this work many flaws and inexperiences, which are already sensitive to me now; but they will also find, I hope, pages in which some aspects and customs of this land of mine are faithfully painted, all the more suffering because it is so dear to me. Ceará, 1913."

This is a mark of origin, ownership and possession of the book.
"It's a book that, set entirely in the interior of Ceará, doesn't say a word about drought! The landscapes it describes are always the green countryside, the running streams, the tablelands in bloom. Nothing of the skeletal and starving Ceará, the Ceará of the droughts and the migrants."
"And the most curious thing of all is that this Ceará of Antônio Sales not only exists, but exists more constantly and truly than the other, dramatic Ceará of the times of the scourge. Because we mustn't forget that drought is a sporadic incidence, fortunately spaced out over years or decades. And there have been blessed periods of more than ten years without drought."
"This novel by Antônio Sales, Aves de arribação, in addition to the very special place it deserves in Brazilian literature, due to its high quality, has an originality when it comes to a novel from the Northeast and, more than the Northeast, from Ceará."

Marbling detail - Arrival birds (Séc. XX) by Antonio SallesBiblioteca Central Professor Antônio Martins Filho [Acervo Djacir Menezes]
Veins of bibliographic marbling
The marbling technique enhanced the aesthetic presentation of the books. On the cover pages and the lining of the front or back covers, marbling gave the sewn and backed brochures object status in mass-produced books.
Many of the volumes in the Djacir Menezes Collection, published between the 19th and 20th centuries, show marbled paper with abstract veins and intense colors.
Barão de Studart's historiographical output was fruitful and relevant to studies of Ceará society and its political, cultural, economic and geographical details, such as the following works: Notas sobre a Linguagem e os Costumes do Ceará [1892], Para a História do Jornalismo Cearense [1924], Geografia do Ceará [1924], Dicionário Bibliográfico Cearense [in three volumes, from 1910] and Usos e Superstições Cearenses [1910].
Exemplary Novels. (Séc. XVII) by Djacir MenezesBiblioteca Central Professor Antônio Martins Filho [Acervo Djacir Menezes]
Endless narratives, different ways of saying...
The novella is a textual genre that is neither long nor short. It is a prose narrative whose length is intermediate: it lies between the short story and the novel.
Made up of language resources that refer to actions marked by the notion and representation of time, by the omnipresent narrator, by the opening of themes to be debated...
This is a collection of short texts, in the form of a novella, written between 1590 and 1612. However, they were only published in 1613, like this edition that is added to the Djacir Menezes Collection.
In these novels, Miguel de Cervantes deals with themes of everyday life, memory and the existence of his contemporaneity.
