"My son Bem was starting to learn guitar and I said I couldn’t be his teacher because my didactics are terrible. ‘Let’s find someone,’ I said, and he went to study with Cezar Mendes, who is from Bahia, but was in Rio de Janeiro. And he gradually joined my band. He ended up playing a very important role in the work with me, in the variation toward more acoustic forms and everything.”

Nara Gil
The singer’s eldest daughter was one of Gilberto Gil's first descendants to create musical collaborations on her father’s records. In 1983, she sang alone (with her father doing vocals) the lively “Preciso de você,” which closed the A side of the Extra album.

The song was written by Gil especially for Nara to sing. And she continued to do vocals in her father’s concerts and records, as well as developing a career as an actress. She played the character Black Boy in the TV series Armação Ilimitada, in the 1980s.

Nara Gil also recorded an album as lead woman for the reggae group Obina Shok: her voice is on Sallée, the band’s second album, released in 1988. In the early 2000s, she was part of the band Lanlan e os Elaines and, later, she was vocalist in the band Moinho.

Pedro Gil
Gilberto Gil’s first son with Sandra Gadelha, his third wife, Pedro was in his father’s band during his teenage years, participating in records such as Raça Humana (1984).

Later, he drummed for Egotrip, a band that recorded only one album in 1987 and also had another great musician from Gil’s band, Arthur Maia (bass), as a member.

Gil’s first male son played with his father in the first Rock In Rio, in 1985, and would have played the São Paulo Hollywood Rock of 1990, but suffered a car accident, was in a coma and died in a few days.
Gil's show at the Rio edition of the festival was canceled and Margareth Menezes performed in his place.

Preta Gil
Gil’s daughter with Sandra Gadelha, Preta took a few years to embrace her singing career. Between one project and another, she almost became a back-up singer for Marina Lima, besides having studied theatre and worked as a producer.

Preta Gil started performing and has her own Carnaval trio in Rio de Janeiro. She also helps produce Camarote Expresso 2222, which her father has had in the capital of Bahia since 1998.
Drão
In the video, she sings the song that Gil wrote when he separated from Sandra. Preta has a strong emotional involvement with “Drão,” whose title was inspired by her mother’s nickname.

Maria Gil
Also Gil’s daughter with Sandra, Maria Gil works in the logistics area, national concerts and tours. When Gil took over the Ministry of Culture (from 2003 to 2008), Maria acted as an aide in the exchange between the politician and the artist.

Bem Gil
Gil’s first son with Flora Giordano Gil, the kid that appears on the cover of the album Dia Dorim Noite Neon ended up developing a musical career and started collaborating with his father in 2003, during the Bahia Carnaval.

In 2006, at the age of 21, he became an electric guitar player in his father’s band, and had an active role in the album Banda Larga Cordel, from 2008, playing acoustic and electric guitars. He also played in the album’s concerts and since then has been one of Gil’s most active band musicians.

Bem has also developed his own projects, such as the band Tono. Recently, he even collaborated with his own sons Dom and Bento.

With Gil, Bem led other projects: he produced the album OK OK OK, from 2018, and the stage celebration of the 40th anniversary of the album Refavela. Even his son Dom took part in these concerts, dancing with the band.

The guitar player also joined a “cousin” in music: Moreno Veloso, son of Caetano Veloso. They performed and produced the projects Gilbertos Samba, by his father (2014), and Dois Amigos e Um Século de Música, by Gil and Caetano (2015). Moreno was also in Refavela 40.

José Gil
José Gil, the singer’s youngest son, came later to the team and was on the album OK OK OK, in which tour he also played.
Gilsons
Both José and Gil’s grandchildren João (son of Nara) and Francisco (son of Preta) are members of the band Gilsons. The group, whose name is a word play with Gilberto Gil (it comes from the English “Gil’s sons”), has even performed on the TV show Música Boa ao Vivo, on the Multishow channel, alongside Preta Gil, and on Globo’s Altas Horas, accompanying the patriarch.

Gilberto Gil and the Gilsons backstage at the concert they performed together in the parade to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Yes, Brazil brand.
João Gil also participated in the album Banda Larga Cordel, which, by the way, represented a family reunion at Palco, Gil’s studio. His sons Nara, Preta (both vocalists), Bem (on acoustic and electric guitars) and his grandson João (on guitar) recorded with Gilberto Gil. Also on vocals was Barbara Ohana, Bem’s ex-wife and Bento’s mother.

Recently, Gilberto Gil and one of his granddaughters—daughter of chef, nutritionist, and TV presenter Bela Gil—appeared sharing songs and stages, for instance in TV shows Altas Horas and Só Toca Top, on Globo.

In a video recorded in the midst of isolation due to the new coronavirus pandemic, grandfather and granddaughter sang Britney Spears’s “Baby One More Time.”

They also made a video singing the hit Italian song by Domenico Modugno, invited by the #WeAreItaly movement, in honor of the country’s people, one of the most affected by the virus.
