Three heroes of the Haitian Revolution
St. Louis Blaise has painted three heroes of the Haitian revolution on horseback. The caption at the bottom of the painting is in French and translates to "These were very severe measures against the French. Dessalines, Petion, Capois".
A revolutionary General on a bay horse
Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1805 constitution. Under Dessalines, Haiti became the first country to permanently abolish slavery.
Dessalines' bay colored horse
Bay is a hair coat color of horses, characterized by a reddish-brown or brown body color. Dessalines horse has a brand marked "JJD".
The Citadel
Citadelle Laferrière is a large early 19th-century fortress located approximately 27 kilometres (17 mi) south of the city of Cap-Haïtien.
Petion and Capois
On the white horse is Alexandre Pétion, and on the black horse is François Capois or Capois-La-Mort. Capois is one of the heroes of the Battle of Vertières, the last major battle of the Haitian Revolution, fought on November 18th, 1803.

Damballah is the most powerful loa in Haitian Vodou. He is spirit of all mysteries who assisted Bondye in creating the world. Now he helps sustain the world as a source of energy and persistent life force.
Signature of Artist
St. Louis Blaise was born in Cap-Haïtien in 1956. He was the second of four brothers who were all painters. St. Louis began painting in 1971, studying with Charles Anatole and the Bottex brothers. He worked at Galerie Issa and later was represented by Galerie Monnin.
