At the time, when the coal mine and the coking plant were in operation, Zollverein with its modern technical facilities was already a location for innovation. This has not changed since the decommissioning: Today, ideas are promoted and innovations are driven forward at the World Heritage Site. A precondition for this is education, which is inseparably connected with further development.
Campus Welterbe Zollverein
In the "Quartier Nord” at Shaft 1/2/8, the design faculty of the internationally renowned Folkwang University of the Arts occupies an ultra-modern building. A further astonishing chapter was thus added to the history of the structural transformation at Zollverein.
Around 500 students together with 70 lecturers and staff fill the almost 19.000-square-metre building with life and creativity. Cubes in an offset arrangement form the four-storey building complex, the facade of which is made of galvanized steel sheet.
Rooms and workshops flooded with light provide perfect studying and working conditions for the students of photography, industrial and communication design. During the lectures and seminars, 1.030 windows open up views of the incomparable surroundings.

The North Rhine-Westphalian branch of the Association of German Architects honoured "Campus Nord" as an outstanding building, considering the rough materiality and the precise processing to be directly related to the industrial World Heritage, yet without copying it.

Zollverein Competence Centre
The Zollverein Competence Centre of TÜV NORD Bildung, the training unit of the TÜV Nord Group, has been an established institution for vocational training since 1990. At Zollverein, the modern combination of commercial and technical qualification, IT-based competence development and language education for specialists and executive staff is successfully achieved.
