When history becomes art

As part of the MORIAS ’21 prog young artists of the Athens School of Fine Arts, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Erato Chatzisavva, make their artistic mark on selected towns and cities of the Peloponnese, creating contemporary murals inspired by the Revolution and its heroes.

The heartland of the 1821 Revolution

Towns across the Peloponnese peninsula witnessed some of the most extraordinary events of the Struggle and are closely associated with the most prominent figures of the Greek revolt.

On this artistic journey, one can view the portraits of some of the most celebrated fighters of the Revolution not in some museum, but seamlessly integrated into the urban fabric, on buildings and walls. Historic moments of the Revolution, which until now we  have only read about, come “to life” in original artworks that additionally shed light on certain lesser-known aspects of the Struggle.

The initiative also includes a series of preliminary sketches across the Peloponnese, as well as its detailed presentation which has already taken place in Pylos.

Kretsis, Theodoros Kolokotronis against Ibrahim Pasha

Messini - Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt followed a scorched-earth policy, burning the olive groves and villages of the Peloponnese in 1827.

In his Memoirs, Theodoros Kolokotronis writes:
“… trees cannot oppose themselves to anyone; only men can be arrayed in opposition to each other… but even if you burn all our trees and houses, leaving no one stone upon another, we will not submit…”
