'The Potato Eaters' (1885)
Van Gogh saw the The Potato Eaters as a showpiece to prove he was on his way to becoming a good figure painter. The painting is showing the harsh reality of country life.

'Self Portrait' (1887-1888)
Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in the winter of 1887-1888, when he had been living in Paris for nearly two years. Since his arrival in the city he had devoted much study to the dotted Pointillist technique.
