Bedouin Girl
Shamsa the Bedouin Girl represents traditional Dubai, as well as the Bedouin values of sharing and hospitality, so crucial for Expo and the wider world.
She is wearing a traditional dress with the Expo motif added; she’s also wearing the ring that become the basis for the Expo logo, which was found in Saruq al Hadid, the remains of an ancient settlement in the Dubai desert.
She is reaching up, a symbol for the human desire to always get to a better place and to connect.

He is talking about the fact that the pearl diving era is coming to an end (the scene is set in the 1950s) and that he needs to find new ways to provide for his children.
He is reaching for the pearl in the next room; on the pearl we see the development of the Dubai Creek from 1920-1970, so you could say he’s also reaching for the modern world.
