The "Season Reels"

These videos give a vivid impression of the public events over the years, presenting a wide array of time-based art works from music, dance, theater, moving image, and installations the majority of which were commissioned, developed, and produced at EMPAC.

SeasonB (2020) by EMPACEMPAC — The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The “Season Reels” give an impression of the scope of the public events curated and presented at EMPAC. The format of the videos varies widely, sometimes with longer excerpts from the performances, other times compressed to a minute long.

Since the opening of the building, almost all events have been professionally documented. An archive with over 600 videos is accessible to the public at EMPAC. For copyright reasons access is currently limited to the premises of the university.

Residencies, commissions of new works, performances, and lectures are programmed by the curatorial team across different disciplines of time-based arts. Before the building opened in the fall of 2008, the curatorial team started to build the program taking place in different venues on our campus.

After the opening of the building with its research and production facilities, the public events shifted to mainly present commissions and productions developed during residencies at EMPAC in a collaboration with artists, curators, and the production teams.

These videos do not touch on each and every public event and do not include all artists who presented at EMPAC.

Additional season reels will be added as they are completed.

Programming EMPAC: The First 4,158 Days (2016) by Eileen BaumgartnerEMPAC — The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Programming EMPAC: The First 4,158 Days, documents the events, projects, and works developed and presented at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center from 2014 back to inception.

In these first days and years, hundreds of people from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines came to create new work — artists, scholars, researchers, and students — all in collaboration with EMPAC’s team.

After a preliminary programming phase up to the opening of the building in October 2008, productions and presentations on site started full steam ahead.
