Design Indaba 10×10 Low Cost Housing Project (2009) by Design IndabaThe Index Project

“This picture sparks joy, it’s design being put to work for a wholesome purpose – it’s an embodiment of Design Indaba’s raison d'être: ‘A better world through creativity’. Design becomes more meaningful when it starts resolving socio-economic challenges – and that’s just what this picture and project represents. It’s a picture of Design Indaba’s 10x10 Low Cost Housing Project. It was a design-led response to the need for affordable housing for the urban poor - yet another product of the Think Tank (our annual assembly of creative minds) and Do Tank (our ongoing impact accelerator) aligning.”

“Ten architectural teams handpicked from South Africa and international Design Indaba alumni to develop practical and empathetic solutions to the challenge. From the ten teams emerged a clear frontrunner,  a solution that proposed homes constructed from sandbags, using the Eco-Beam timber frame system, developed from sustainable design, construction and operation principles.”
