Hosting both cricket in summer and Australian football in winter, the MCG undergoes a radical transformation twice a year to accommodate each of these elite sports.

The MCG has pioneered the world’s first successful portable cricket pitch technology, allowing the use of removable pitches which are installed each year. Pitches are installed at the start of the cricket season and removed at the end of summer to create a safe playing surface for football.

The system enables the ground to be transformed quickly, allowing the MCG to produce a FIFA-standard soccer pitch for Olympic football just 10 days after the 2000 AFL Grand Final. In December 1999 an AFL exhibition match was staged just 24 hours after the conclusion of the Boxing Day Test.
