Faculty Legacy
The Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts has been expanded by the generosity of faculty who have made donations of their artworks and by benefactors who have given the Museum works by Karl Zerbe, Robert W. Fichter, Arthur Deshaies, William Walmsley, George Blakely, Ray Burggraf and Mark Messersmith, among others. The diverse faculty who have taught at Florida State University since it became a co-ed institution after WWII have shaped generations of students’ careers.

“A lot of learning has gone on in this place, in our various blocks of time here, with an amazing variety of faculty and fellow students. We learned in classrooms and studios of the former Art Department that moved from the upper floors of the Westcott Building before the fire, to the mysterious, former Florida State College for Women Seminole Dining Hall spaces and then into the new brick bulges and planes of the Fine Arts Building with later expansions to the more practical warehouse studios at Railroad Square for the studio art students. . . .Learning in that place and with our respective group’s mix of people and professors was a gift.”
—Excerpted from “Wisdom and Billiard Balls” written by Marsha Orr (BA 1970/MFA 1973) in 1998 for a reunion exhibition. Ms. Orr directed the University Art Gallery in 1977-78 and went on to the State Arts Agency to help found the Art in State Buildings Program and direct the Individual Artists’ Fellowship and museum programs for the State of Florida. In 1993, she was coordinator for Jean Claude and Christo during his “Surrounded Islands: A Project for Biscayne Bay, Miami.”
