MMCA Cheongju, The National Art Storage Center
From a tobacco factory...
There was a tobacco factory in Cheongju which was a representative industrial facility of the city and the basis of the citizens' lives from its establishment in 1946 immediately after liberation until its operation was suspended in 2004. The factory was rebuilt as an art museum based on the signed business agreement between the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) and Cheongju city.

After 14 years of reconstruction, this place was transformed into the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Cheongju (MMCA Cheongju). In 2018, it was reborn as an art museum where the main collections of the MMCA are stored and displayed.
MMCA Cheongju, The National Art Storage Center
MMCA Cheongju, the National Art Storage Center, opened on December 27, 2018, as an addition to MMCA Gwacheon, Deoksugung, and Seoul for effective management of the national assets in the museum collection and to expand the scope of cultural arts exchange. The National Art Storage Center houses optimized facilities and specialized staff for management, conservation, research, exhibition, and education of the Korean and overseas modern and contemporary artworks in the museum collection.
Open Storage (1F)
The Open Storage on the first floor is open to the public all times to offer a visual update on the status of artworks owned and managed by the museum. This space presents around 500 works of sculpture, craft, and design acquired by the MMCA since 1971.
Visible Storage (2~4F)
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows lining the corridors of the second, third, and fourth floors, visitors can observe some of the most recognized works in the museum storage, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs, and the conditions of their conservation.

Open Storage (3F)
The Open Storage on the third floor features around 120 paintings, photographs, and media artworks from the MMCA Art Bank, established in 2015 to vitalize the art market and popularize the culture of art.
Visible Conservation Science Laboratory (3F)
MMCA Cheongju, is the first place in East Asia that has facilities designed for specialized conservation of artwork by type.

Visible Conservation (3F)
There are 15 preservation and treatment rooms specialized in the preservation and restoration of artworks. Preservation of works is the general task of preventing or restoring works of art from being deformed or damaged by physical or chemical factors. MMCA Cheongju analyzes materials through preservation science and restores them. Learn more about conservation science through a special exhibition "The Day of Conservation Scientists C".

The Special Storage on the forth floor is dedicated to artwork conservation and management as well as in depth studies on works, providing access to intensive research materials on major artists and works in the museum collection.

The Special Exhibition Gallery presents themed exhibitions of works in the MMCA collection and various special exhibitions that highlight Korean and overseas modern and contemporary art to offer an experience of the originality, versatility, and creative energy embodied by contemporary art.

Rest Area 'Teum' (2F)
In addition to the open storages, labs, and exhibition halls, MMCA Cheongju has spaces for visitors' resting and learning. 'Teum' on the second floor offers a rest area as well as various educational programs for visitors. An archive of the MMCA’s past exhibition catalogues and a video delineating the history of artworks in the museum collection are also available here.
