Tam Giang lagoon is the largest brackish lagoon in Southeast Asia, and belongs to the longest system of Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon in Vietnam, with a length of about 24 kilometers. Covering an area of about 52 square-meters, Tam Giang lagoon stretches from O Lau estuary to the Perfume river’s estuary, located in four districts of Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Tra and Phu Vang of Thua Thien Hue province.

Tam Giang lagoon accounts for about 11% of Vietnam's coastal lagoon. The lagoon has an average depth of 2–4 meters, the deepest point is more than 7 meters. The lagoon is separated from the East Sea by a sand dunes range, which is 10-30m high and 0.3 to 5 kilometers wide.
