An (involuntarily) rare hybrid from a legendary manufacturer: the Moog Opus 3 combines strings, organ, and brass in just four octaves.

We’re now living in an era where many musicians buy instruments based on weight, which should of course be as low as possible, just to waste their free time building muscles in gyms. The previous generation, on the other hand, actually saw the heavy lifting and carrying of Hammonds, Rhodes, and CP-80s as a welcome union between physical training and a full sound :-)

This sorry trend had already begun by the late ‘70s with classics such as the Crumar Multiman, Arp Quadra, and even this Moog Opus 3. The compact pipsqueak arrived to unite the New York Philharmonic, a Hammond B3, and the horn section of Earth, Wind & Fire. Well, it might not be as great as those in terms of quality, but the manufacturer’s intention left no room for interpretation.

However, if you break free from those lofty demands, you’re also left with a friendly, clearly designed trio with the Moog Opus 3 that even manages to look good.

However, it still sold incredibly poorly compared to any much-loved composition by the New York Philharmonic or Earth, Wind & Fire.

Life is and always will be unfair … :-)
