When Real Becomes Symbolic

Autumn landscape (1920) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

Autumn Landscape

The impressionistic autumn landscape creates a vibrant atmosphere within a sunny autumn’s day.

Interestingly enough, the log in the foreground bears the colours of the Lithuanian flag – yellow on the top, green in the middle and red at the bottom.

Trees. The Palermo motif (1924/1927) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

Trees. The Palermo Motif

The composition entitled Trees depicts a fragment of Palermo: it encodes tensity in the upper right corner of the composition by using tree branches, their shadows, and the red glow of the setting sun, all of which form a surreal image of a white otherworldly being.

The fountain in the park (1924) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

The Fountain in the Park

Subtle colour transitions and contrasting light and darkness elements form a spectacularly realistic image of flowing water.

The shade of green used to colour the land expresses the feeling that one experiences on a refreshing afternoon during spring.

The courtyard and the fountain (1924) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

The Courtyard and the Fountain

A fountain in a park lies in the foreground. It possesses intricate anthropomorphic forms and, in some areas, it mimics a silhouette of the tree that grows further behind it, including its colours.

This way, it is granted the characteristics of living nature.

Cacti in Palermo (early 20th century) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

Cacti in Palermo

First and foremost, the picture captivates the eye with the black, decorative and broad-brush, immensely powerful, explosive shape of a cactus placed in a setting of subtle flowers and grasses against the backdrop of a blue sky.

The Banana Forest is also considered a decorative work of art by Stabrowski.

The pastel records the impressions of an exotic journey, depicting graceful palm trees and its bright banana blossoms.

Sea shore (early 20th century) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

Sea Shore

The waters that wash the stony shores is a frequent artistic motif that Stabrowski likes to utilise in his works.

However, this time he differentiates with a clear blue horizontal line and an otherworldly blueness shining from the waters.

The Capri shore (1900/1910) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

The Capri Shore

The light green composition depicts a stretch of water at a stony shore illuminated by the sun.

K. Stabrowski has studied nature, lighting, and water reflections to a great extent, so he puts his knowledge and skill into practice by creating an impressionistic and vibrant visual of transparent water in motion.

The medusae (from the collection "Inhabitants of the Sea") (1913) by Kazimierz StabrowskiLithuanian Art Fund

The Medusae (from the Collection "Inhabitants of the Sea")

The painting depicting the depths of the underwater world is a part of the K. Stabrowski collection of pastel paintings entitled Inhabitants of the Sea.

The medusae are swimming in random directions, but all of them are situated at the top and on the left side of the  composition. Water bubbles extending throughout the entire length of the right side of the composition serve as a symbolic vertical line between the underwater world and the world outside it.
