Entering the fairgrounds
Entering from 12th or 7th Street, the smell of popcorn and sweet funnel cake filled the warm summer air. The Great American State Fair was free and open to everyone, a grand invitation to join neighbors and friends from every corner of the Union.

Standing tall against the sky is the iconic Ferris wheel. It turns slowly, offering breathtaking, bird's-eye views of the Washington Monument and the Capitol. Below, the National Mall is alive with a patchwork of pavilions.

Starting the adventure
Walking down the gravel path, we find more than 150 exhibits from all 56 states and territories. Each pavilion is a street-level window into a different home—showcasing local traditions, regional foods, and civic pride that bind us together. Visitors can collect passport stamps from each pavilion.

Inside the American Canvas Pavilion, hands-on activities invite kids and parents to paint, sketch, and sculpt. As the nation's largest funder of the arts, the NEA has supported community creativity across the country since 1965.

Music echoed across the Mall. At the Legacy Stage, we stop to listen. Backed by the National Endowment for the Humanities, this stage hosts over 200 performances by artists representing 29 different states and jurisdictions.

On Military & Veterans Appreciation Day, spectacular flyovers streaked across the sky, leaving white trails. Families stood side-by-side with veterans, honoring their service under the shade of the Mall's historic elm trees.
