Eccentric and visionary, divisive and controversial - legendary Spanish artist Salvador Dalí has always divided opinion. He cultivated an air of mystery and extravagance, and some say his life was a work of art as much as his paintings and sculpture.

But how much do you really know about the surrealist master's life and work? Take our Dalí test to find out.

Question 1

With which major film studio did Dalí work with to create an experimental animated short film?

Walt Disney Studios

Dalí and Disney's film Destino was only released for the first time in 2003. It was first storyboarded in 1945 but World War 2 had taken its toll on Disney and production was halted until 1999. It was only then, when Walt Disney's nephew Roy E. Disney unearthed it, that production was resumed.

Question 2

How did Dalí pay his restaurant bills?

With a drawing

Dalí managed to cheat his way out of a few substantial restaurant bills, generally after hosting extravagant dinners for friends. Rather than paying the bill he would write out a cheque for a tiny amount then make a drawing on its back. Given his notoriety, few restaurants ever turned down his method of payment, and more often than not the establishments wouldn't cash the cheques.

Question 3

What animal did Dalí keep as a pet?

An ocelot

It might have been disappointing for larger-than-life Dalí to have kept a dog or a budgie. He did have a cat, but it was no ordinary cat. Babou was an ocelot who accompanied Dalí to restaurants (perhaps another reason he got away with not paying his bills).

Question 4

Which famous psychoanalyst influenced his work?

Sigmund Freud

As an art student in Madrid in the 1920s, Dalí read Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams. This book inspired his interest in ideas of self-interpretation as a creative tool to fuel his work. The two finally met in London just before the war after Freud had fled Nazi-occupied Vienna.

Question 5

Which insect terrified him the most?

Grasshoppers

Fears of spiders, scorpions and other creepy crawlies are not uncommon but Dalí suffered from a phobia of grasshoppers. When they appear in his work they usually symbolize death, plague, or decay.
