Only a Small Elite
The 74 members of the Constituent Assembly of 1848 are all men – mostly affluent landowners, jurists, or civil servants. They were indirectly elected by a tiny upper class: according to the monarchical Constitution of 1841, only 0.2% of the population was eligible to vote. The census-based voting law was highly controversial. Summary session minutes provide insight into the political and societal attitudes of the representatives.

Theatre instead of protocol, participation instead of distance. The question remains: How inclusive is our democracy?
Theatre over ceremony, participation over distance
On Friday, April 28, 2023, around 800 guests immersed themselves in the spirit of 1848 during a festive event at the Däichhal in Ettelbruck.
