Ima market
The most prominent market in Manipur, more a historic institution than a mere marketplace, is the Ima Market or Ima Keithal in Imphal. It is also called the Khawairaband Bazaar. It is considered the largest women’s market in Asia. The market began as a series of small platforms covered by tine roofs. It has now expanded into a group of resplendent buildings.

The Ima Market was established sometime in the 16th Century and has a history that elevates it as a symbol of women’s empowerment and participation in the history of Manipur.
During British occupation they valiantly gathered to fight the administration’s orders to export their local rice. Their movement called Nupi Lan is well remembered as a powerful force that stood up when the menfolk were forcibly sent to fight wars outside.
It remained a strong consolidation of women who enjoy coming out to vend their wares and exchange news.

The government built an expansive set of buildings in which over 5000 women come out to sell everything possible from beads to vegetables to mosquito nets and prayer items.

Kauna baskets in Imphal
This strong movement led by women established a tradition of women vendors all over Manipur. It is striking to see most indoor and outdoor markets with women vendors, although shops selling industrial goods are still run by menfolk. Small stalls, open air spaces and shops dedicated to kauna products are found dotted across Imphal. They are sold more as local utility items rather than as artefacts.
