Progressions

Progressions was founded in 2003, as we sought to expand the opportunity for music education to City of Milwaukee students who often faced barriers of access and equity.

Immersive training
Progressions musicians meet three times a week for private lessons, a masterclass, and an orchestral rehearsal.

It Takes a Village
The success of Progressions depends on volunteers like Tony Lucas, who has been faithfully helping musicians since the program's founding over 25 years ago.

More than Music
Tony holds down a full-time job as Director of Engineering and Operations, but he still makes time to volunteer three times each week to help the kids with music and social skills development.

Mentors
Progressions also relies on the enthusiasm and support of advanced MYSO musician volunteers who give back to the programs.

MYSO's Progressions students perform four concerts a year.

A National Model
MYSO was named a National Arts and Humanities Youth Arts Program Award Winner in 2015 for its work through Progressions. To date, MYSO is the only youth orchestra in the country ever to have received this award.
