Willing to
totally erase the past, the communists cancelled the National Decorations
System and set up a new one, according to the Soviet Union pattern. But the
former system was restored with the fall of the totalitarian regime.
Decorations and medals in Romanian space
In Romania, the medals and decorations have been established in modern history time. There is only one case recorded in the period of the Middle Ages, when Prince Vlad Dracul, father of Vlad Țepeș, has been anointed as Knight of the Dragon Order by the German Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg. Following the 1859 Union, the Romanian leaders, led by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, have raised the issue of establishing national decorations, to reward the citizen’s actions towards the homeland and the ruler. In 1860, Prince Cuza established “Pro Virtute Militari” medal, but for some political reasons, he never awarded it to anyone.
The royal heritage
Three honours that have been established during Alexandru Ioan Cuza’s reign – The Order of the Union, the Order of the Romanian Star and the Military Virtue medal –, were taken over and officially rewarded by King Carol I. The first distinctions granted by the young Romanian state had military character. The recognition of the state’s independence by the Great Powers of the time, following the participation of the Romanian army in the Russian-Turkish war (1877-1878), has legally liberated the Romanian state. Accordingly, under the reigns of King Carol I, King Ferdinand I and King Carol II, a system of war and peace decorations has been established, which included orders, medals, crosses and badges.
The decoration system erased by the communists
After King Mihai I was forced to abdicate, on December 30, 1947, all the traditional symbols of the Romanian state were abolished, altogether with the entire system of civil and military decorations in use up to that date. All the new decorations of the Romania People’s Republic were, basically, reproductions of the ones used by the Soviet Union. At first, the decoration system established after 1948 was not meant to grant ”honour” to the recipients, but to offer certain material benefits that were very welcomed by a poor society, which proclaimed a relative egalitarianism of earnings. Starting with the constitution of the Socialist Republic in Romania, in 1964, the form of the new created distinctions and some of the already existing decorations are being changed, „modernized”, partially abandoning the preponderance of the five-cornered red star and the crossed sickle and hammer symbol.
Symbols recovered with sacrifices
After the Revolution in 1989, which led to the falling of the communist regime, the new political apparatus could no longer offer the soviet inspired distinctions of the totalitarian period. Therefore, starting with 1990, during almost 15 years, the entire medal system was restored to the present form. One of the priorities of the new governments has always been the symbolic relink with the modern Romanian state of the monarchy period. Consequently, names, shapes and design elements from that period have been integrated in the new forms of the distinctions, asserting a historical continuity with the democratic past.
