"This is the handsomest building I ever saw."

Teddy Roosevelt expressed those words during his visit for the dedication of the Capitol building in 1906. Known as the "Palace of Art," this building is known for its ornate features, paintings, and beautiful stained glass.

House Chamber

The House Chamber is perhaps best known for the "Hours Mural" adorning the ceiling of the chamber. Painted by Edwin Austin Abbey during the early 20th Century.

The stained glass in each Chamber symbolizes history, art, and the industries of Pennsylvania. The one on the left is from the House Chamber and is "Liberty." The window on the right is from the Senate Chamber and is "Legislature."

Speaker Portraits

After the conclusion of a Speaker's tenure, a painting is commissioned to honor their service. These hang in the hallway outside the Speaker's office to honor all the past Speakers.

Lady Commonwealth

Adoring the top of the Capitol dome, is Lady Commonwealth. Over the years, many artists have copied her grandeur in miniature form for everyone to enjoy.
