The Columbus Commission

In 1892, when the fourth centenary of the discovery of America was celebrated, a Columbus Commission was set up in Italy, promoted by the Ministry of Education.

The Commission had recourse to the most distinguished scholars in the fields of history and geography and could, therefore, publish a monumental collection of documents and studies on Columbus, which is still today the fundamental basis for the studies on Columbus.

A monumental collection

A monumental work recording unpublished details of the great navigator's voyages of exploration and discovery, in the form of critical communications and official documents that eventually led to the colonization of America.
