The NFM building was designed by Kuryłowicz & Associates Architecture Studio, selected through an international architectural contest. The architect was inspired by a musical instrument – its shape and the façade covering imitating timber resemble the body of a string instrument.

In the early stages

The first Polish orchestra in Wrocław after World War II was established just after the downfall of the Festung Breslau by musicians coming to settle down in Wrocław from various parts of Poland. In the ruined city, the artists established themselves as an ensemble under the direction of Stefan Syryłło.

In the 1946/1947 season Stanisław Skrowaczewski was appointed associate conductor of the Philharmonic. When in 1949 Wrocław Opera became a state institution, the orchestra became an opera-only ensemble and from 1949-1953 a philharmonic orchestra was sadly missing from Wrocław’s cultural life.

The Main Hall seats 1800 people and includes the parterre, amphitheatre, choir and three balconies. All the NFM halls are acoustically insolated through multiple massive walls, structural breaks, and base building isolation systems. The Main Hall can be thought of a structurally independent building within the NFM buidling, isolated from the rest of the buidling and from sources of noise and vibration from external sources.

Concert of NFM Leopoldinum Chamber Orchestra by Łukasz RajchertNational Forum of Music in Wrocław

NFM Leopoldinum Chamber Orchestra

With its name referring to one of the most precious monuments of Central Europe’s baroque architecture - the Aula Leopoldina at the Wroclaw University - the NFM Leopoldinum Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1978. Artistic identity of the ensemble was shaped by several music personalities but the most influential was violinist Karol Teutsch. He knew how to connect the best individual skills of orchestra’s musicians and created a tradition of artistic director with both, virtuoso-performer and conducting talents. After seven fruitful years under the direction of violinist Ernst Kovacic orchestra is now artistically leaded by viola soloist Hartmut Rohde, profesor at the Universität der Künste in Berlin who also teaches at the Royal Academy of Music London.

The Educational Centre

The National Forum of Music Education Centre is a new initiative designed with the youngest children in mind. We organize classes for expectant mothers, infants, kindergarten children and young schoolchildren. The Education Centre was born from love of music and from our deep conviction that everyone needs music. This is the most beautiful and most universal art form. Music teaches, moves our emotions, develops, relaxes, cures  and provides extraordinary experiences.

Wroclaw Philharmonic Dwarves

Small figurines that first appeared in the streets of Wrocław, Poland, in 2001. Since then, their numbers have been continually growing, and today they are considered a tourist attraction. In 2001, to commemorate the Orange Alternative (anti-communist movement), a figurine of a dwarf (the movement’s symbol) was officially placed on Świdnicka Street, where the group’s happenings used to take place. Now in front of the NFM we can find a whole orchestra!

Growing

During Tauron Musica Electronica Nova (MEN) a space in front of NFM began to grow. In an unusual edition entitled Growing inscribes itself into the motto of Wrocław European Capital of Culture 2016 – Spaces for Beauty. The programme is themed around the idea of breeding and coming into existence, so unequivocally communicated in the installation of Jean-Luc Hervé, changing a part of the concrete square in front of the NFM into verdure growing with music.
