Guardian of values
Created in 1965 with the mission of maintaining currency stability, over its 60 years the Central Bank has also become the guardian of the history of money in Brazil.
First coins issued by the Central Bank
In the very year of its creation and assuming administration of the circulating currency, the Central Bank issued coins in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 cruzeiros.

In 1966, this note was issued, the first to bear the name of the Central Bank. While following the 1942 cruzeiro pattern, the change is noticeable in the band above the denomination and the rosette. Where "Tesouro Nacional" was written, it became "Banco Central," the new issuer of Brazilian currency.

Creation of the Museu de Valores
Also in 1966, with the aim of raising awareness and educating people about the importance of money, the Central Bank Board decided to create its own museum.

Inauguration of the Museu de Valores
The Museu de Valores opened in 1972 as part of the 150th anniversary of Independence. It was housed in the former Amortization Fund building in Rio de Janeiro, which also housed the Circulating Currency Management Office.

10 years of the Central Bank
To celebrate the Central Bank's 10th anniversary, this silver coin was issued in 1975, worth 10 cruzeiros.
Although launched before construction began on the Central Bank Headquarters Building, the reverse of the coin already featured the institution's logo, inspired by the building's architectural design.
Moving to Brasília
The 1967 Constitution mandated the relocation of all federal agencies to Brasília, which was confirmed by a presidential decision in 1970. Before the construction of the Headquarters Building, the Central Bank operated in 12 different buildings in the federal capital.

Construction of the Headquarters Building
The architectural design for the Headquarters Building was designed by the Hélio Ferreira Pinto firm. Construction began on August 11, 1975, and was completed on May 20, 1981. The project utilized revolutionary processes for Brazilian engineering at the time.

Museum always present
The Museu de Valores was already planned during the construction of the Headquarters Building, where it is located and what it looks like. In this photo, from June 1978, you can see the famous cocoon, built to give visitors the sensation of being inside a gold mine.
Opening of the Museum in Brasília
The Museu de Valores was inaugurated in September 1981, as part of the celebrations of Brazil's Independence.
Opening of the Art Gallery
At the end of the 1980s, the Art Gallery was opened, with works received as payments for debts from financial institutions undergoing extrajudicial liquidation, which occurred between 1976 and 1978.

The Art Gallery was set up in partnership with the National Pró-Memória Foundation and the National Museum of Fine Arts, responsible for the assembly, exhibition and restoration of works.

In 1990, a commemorative stamp was released by the Post Office. The image shows a maximum postcard, consisting of an envelope, stamp and postmark with the same theme.

30 years of the Central Bank
A silver coin with a face value of 3 reais was issued in 1995 to celebrate the Central Bank's 30th anniversary. That same year, the Real Plan completed a successful year in combating hyperinflation.

Consolidation of the Real Plan
The first five years of the Real Plan were marked by a drastic reduction in inflation rates, the rebalancing and restructuring of the banking system, the easing of exchange rates, and the creation of the SPB and the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom).

50 years of the Central Bank
In 2015, this commemorative coin for common circulation, from the second family of the real, was another to join the series of coins whose theme is the anniversary of the Central Bank.
Following the stabilization of the currency, the Central Bank also began focusing on initiatives aimed at democratizing access to financial services and promoting the sustainability and efficiency of the financial system, with a growing emphasis on citizenship and financial education initiatives.

Renovation of the Museu de Valores
Since 2021, the Museu de Valores has been undergoing renovations to become South America's first economics museum. The new museum will address topics such as financial education, sustainability, economics, and the history of payment methods.

At the new Museum, visitors will be invited to recognize themselves as an integral part of the economy. More than preserving history, we work to make it accessible, inspiring, and relevant for new generations.
The museum renovation project is funded by the Diffuse Rights Defense Fund (FDD) of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

50 years of the Museu de Valores
The renovation is part of the change that the Museum underwent when it turned 50 in 2022: in addition to being the guardian of the history of money, the Museu de Valores asserts itself as a strategic instrument of financial citizenship for the Central Bank.
