A temple dedicated to the heirs of Emperor Augustus, Caius and Lucius Caesar, it was erected at the beginning of the 1st century CE. Exceptionally well preserved, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Designed in 1993 by the architect Lord Norman Foster, Carré d'Art includes a contemporary art museum and a library. With its glass cladding, the building enters into a harmonious dialogue with the Maison Carrée in front of it.

In 1988, the artist Martial Raysse redeveloped the Place d'Assas based on the theme of water. On either side of a central canal, two imposing heads face each other, symbolizing Nemausa, the ancestral source of Nîmes, and Nemausus, the masculine force of the city.
