BOOM Concepts Presents Unblurred

Black on Black Magic showcased individual projects from Anqwenique, Bekezela Mguni and DS Kinsel utilizing BOOM Concepts as a crossroads between their practices.

The Reading Room was an installation/intervention which served as a catalytic space for learning, exchange, dialogue and growth through reading and art.

The month long exhibition featured an installation by Anqwenique, Black Unicorn Library Reading Room Pop Up experience by Bekezela Mguni and DS Kinsel’s current project Sacraments, Totems and Shrines.

A+ Schools holds a yearly student art contest for to place artwork on the cover of their Report to the Community on Public School Progress.

Students submitted work through their schools to be represented at BOOM Concepts where attendees voted for their favorite art pieces.

A+ Schools, Pittsburgh’s
independent advocate for equity and
excellence, publishes “Report to the Community on Public School Progress,” which provides a look at PGH’s public and charter schools.

The Contraband exhibit showcased artists from both sides of the prison walls and served as a art show and fundraiser for Prison Justice.

Speakers including family members of people serving life, survivors of violence who support the campaign, read from the writings of those sentenced to life as juveniles.

Kenneth Neely has been documenting black Pittsburgh since 2003; Welcome to Pittsburgh was an exhibition showcasing photographs during that period plus art from his personal collection.

“To have an idea of home, but not a sense of belonging” is how photographer Kenneth Neely describes life for low-income Pittsburghers.

Bloodie Eye Contact is a series of personal works designed by Pittsburgh based artist, Asia Bey.

Inspired by trauma, humor, & romance, she uses comic work, sculpture and multi-media illustration to deconstruct + reconstruct + expand + explore the identity in response to the everyday expectation.

André Jones presented “Friday Night on Mars!”, an exhibition of multimedia artwork and fashion that imagines how 2000's and 2010's pop culture could be interpreted by the natives of Mars.

This exhibition was created with the pondering thought of how would pop culture be interpreted by the natives of Mars?

BOOM Concepts featured “A Piece of BOOM”, artwork of the people who make BOOM possible from the co-founders, studio members, and BOOM assistants along with 3 additional supportive fundraising events.

A Piece Of BOOM featured new multimedia work by Magic Organs aka Darrell Kinsel & Julie Mallis and artwork from leading Studio Member Bekezela Mguni.

Also featured: Studio Manager Anqwenique Wingfield, painting and photography from BOOM assistants Max Emiliano Gonzales, DeVaughn Rodgers, Kuwame Kinsel, Sarah Bader and Jazmine Bailey.
