The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been resident at the Sydney Opera House since the building's opening in 1973. The orchestra's chief conductor is David Robertson, who succeeded Vladimir Ashkenazy at the beginning of 2014.

The orchestra was established by the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) in 1932 as the National Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, and consisted of 24 musicians who performed concert recitals and provided incidental music for radio plays.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra now performs about 150 concerts each year to audiences totalling more than 300,000. The range of concerts is truly diverse, from classical recitals to the music of video games.

This diversity is also reflected in the many artists from around the world who have collaborated with the orchestra through the years.
