Self-portrait in White Dress (1914) by Jacek MalczewskiThe National Museum in Krakow
Created in 1914, 'Self-portrait in White Dress' is one of Jacek Malczewski's most important works, alongside his countless other self-portraits.
The artist portrays only the top half of his body, dressed in white, wearing a blouse with puffy sleeves, and a tied collar.
He also wears a fancy beret with a red band tightly wrapped around his temple.
A wide, leather belt is also wrapped around his hips.
The artist takes a ceremonial pose, with the hand – a knight’s gesture – supported on the hip...
...while the left hand holds a brush as a symbol of the painter’s vocation.
