Do you ever wonder about those pics on mums’ blogs? All those rooms painted in pastel colours and radiant mums in cool clothes...

This beautiful, perfect world only exists in the internet – or in art.

This picture, “The First Step”, painted by Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim anticipates in 1858 what mum bloggers bring to perfection.

Supposedly, this captures the moment when the youngest child took its first step.

Now as we know, there’s nothing more unpredictable than a baby’s first attempts at walking. But here everyone seems to be prepared, dressed up nicely, ...

... and even called in an artist.
And the artist – Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim – was most certainly not someone who’d leave anything to chance. He was a perfectionist.

Before he ever picked up his brushes he painstakingly constructed the scene.

Even with the details he was thorough – every chair was minutely studied and measured.

So this scene is just as real as the blog-pics of perfect kids and perfect families nowadays.

It’s not the actual moment that’s being shown, but something else – the on-trend clothes, the up-to-date furnishings, the lifestyle of a family.

And most importantly how proud they are of their offspring – and that is timeless.
