Research and Development
The GRM's activity in the field of Research & Development is primarily focused on the design of digital tools for processing sound, to be used by students, composers, and audio professionals (working in sound design for cinema, video games, advertising, etc.).

The GRM Tools have been developed since the 1990s and currently consist of a collection of 20 sound processing plug-ins, which are divided into four families: Classic, Spectral Transform, Evolution, and Spaces.
GRM PLAYER Demo (2020) by Dominique Saint-MartinINA grm
GRM-Player is an app for exploring different ways to play digital audio files.
This prototype was initially designed for multi-gesture touchpads with the idea of experimenting with playing situations and real-time composition.

The sound exploration will take place by programming digital audio players, by manipulating variations of direction and speed, and by shifting repetitions to different time scales.
GRM Studio Demo (2020) by Dominique Saint-MartinINA grm
GRM Studio is an app for tablets that was developed with the support of the French Ministry of National Education and which focuses on sound discovery and electroacoustic improvisation.

It promotes direct expressive play and invites the user to literally manipulate the representations of the sound signal.
Modernized and extended version of the mini synthesizer 54 (2020) by Jean Baptiste GarciaINA grm
The GRM continues its work on developing analog instruments. Recently, its staff designed a modernized, expanded version of the 54 GRM mini synthesizer.

This new synthesizer retains the basic characteristics of the original synthesizer designed in the 1960s.
Theoretical Research
Theoretical research and reflections on sound have always been at the heart of the GRM's interests, giving rise to the publication of a great many essays and articles throughout its history. "À la recherche d'une musique concrète" (In search of a musique concrète) and "Traité des Objets Musicaux" (Treatise on musical objects) by Pierre Schaeffer, published in 1952 and 1966 respectively, are two key works which, through the systematic analysis of the phenomenon of sound and our auditory perception, paved the way for numerous musicological reflections.
