Joy and Life (1969) by Luis ChanPower Station of Art
Luis Chan (1905 – 1995) was renowned for his unique artistic vision. Self-taught, Chan soon became considered as the "Watercolor King".
This 102cm × 152cm painting explores a surreal dream-like fantasy scene that reflects the artist resistance and avoidance of tumultuous real world around him.
In the late 60's, Chan worked on a serie focused on the study of figures. This acrylic on Paper was painted in 1969.
In Joy of Life, Chan uses very bright color and very smooth lines reflecting a kind of escape from the complex figurative expression.
Chan was a fine observer of the people and things around him. In his paintings, he let his subconscious organically mixes the characters together and transform their bodies.
“Above all else, art has to stimulate the imagination”. Luis Chan
