Protecting the Amazon, Indigenous Women Must be Included

More than 150 women from more than 500 Indigenous tribes from across the Amazon basin gathered for a 5-day summit in Colombia in 2021

“We are protectors and guardians of life, the jungles and the forests,” said Fany Kuiru, Indigenous leader of the Uitoto people. “Amazonian native women are sowers, healers, midwives, fisherwomen, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, leaders, teachers, professionals. All of us, with our living ancestral culture, are the primary guardians and restorers of biodiversity, of our culture, of seeds, of food, of the sweet word.”

The first gathering of its kind

At the meeting, representatives discussed the challenges the women face in their respective territories, to draw attention to the structural and historical circumstances that have silenced them and to share their struggles and stories of resilience.

Financing for Indigenous women

The summit concluded with a series of mandates including the establishment of a fund for Indigenous women of the Amazon basin, for financing and implementation of the agenda established during the summit.

Indigenous Women Defenders

A second mandate centers on the development of the Network of Indigenous Women Defenders of the Amazonian Territory. This includes establishing leadership schools for Indigenous women and youth that will include training on confronting all forms of violence against women, especially sexual violence.

No one left out or left behind

In addition, the women are demanding participation in all decision-making spaces regarding the Amazon basin at the local, national and international levels. They urge governments and international bodies to promote the active participation of Indigenous women.

Protectors. Defenders. Caregivers.

The summit has also seen the emergence of an Indigenous women’s movement in the Colombian Amazon, beginning with the self-recognition of the role of women as protectors, defenders, caregivers and givers of life in all Amazonian territories.

About the Our Future Forests - Amazonia Verde Project

This summit was funded by Our Future Forests- Amazon Verde Project, which works to conserve up to 12% of the Amazon – some 73 million hectares – by 2025. Supported by the government of France, the initiative seeks to protect, restore and sustainably manage tropical forests. Project activities will benefit more than 68,000 men, women and children in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Suriname.
