Gilberto Gil, a public speaker by nature

Master of a unique rhetoric, the musician has always been asked to express his thoughts.

Throughout Gil’s career—in music, politics or during the times when he balanced both majestically—there was no lack of invitation for masterclasses, biennials, conferences, debates, forums, seminars, and talk shows. As Gilberto Gil conquered the world with his music, he started to also be a part of the international environmental, cultural, and social universe.

The protection and promotion of cultural expressions were constant subjects in the singer and songwriter’s agenda, whether he was at the Inter-American Development Bank or in universities like Harvard, Sorbonne or Brazilian public universities, in Portuguese lands or in China, Tunisia or Canada, in the National Students Union of Brazil or Unesco.

International Audience

Gilberto Gil attended the Brazil Conference, at Harvard University, United States, in 2004, when he talked to students and performed with guitar player Yamandú Costa and singer Laura Rizzotto.

Trips in several countries made Gil an example of the plurality for which he advocated. An ambassador of Brazilian country all over the world, he became a symbol of respect for the various races in the planet. Just like in his songs, his speeches mention the richness of Brazil.

His texts mention the seaside region where he was born, recall the São Paulo concrete jungle or when he used public transportation in Rio de Janeiro, talk about Cerrado savannah, value the “idoneous” Amazonian color, and take introspective pauses like people from the country’s South.

He also talked about the advances he obtained as head of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, like structural reformed achieved, the implementation of a national culture system, promotion of diverse cultural spaces, integration of public and private museums.

Also considering the dynamics of cultural industry, among many other actions, Gilberto Gil makes the world richer with his solicitude and experience of years fighting for human rights.

Culture and development

Attentive to diversity, the musician followed in the footsteps that brought about a new kind of citizenship: as opposed to mass society, he saw the birth of neotribalism—individuals building new arrangements through social networks—and recalled, in his talks, that culture is a governmental obligation. He did not shy away from questioning the absolutism forced by dominant countries and the pressure to create a worldwide pattern of monoculture through imposed consumerism patterns.

By calling for a decentralization of cultural production, he saw it as an element to overcome exclusion, through the many possibilities for job and income in the creative industry—an asset that still needs to be incorporated to the notion of social well-being and sustainable development. In his dialogues as minister, he promoted deals that stimulates cultural exchange and production, making it possible, internally and externally, to raise foreign investments.

Speech

A conscientious speech

Aware of the disparity between the planet’s North and South, he highlights the importance of culture to overcome social inequality and achieve a fuller citizenship, by reinforcing self-esteem and a feeling of belonging.

Gilberto Gil often says that giving precedence to economic aspects in social relations reduces culture to a mere product, whereas the opposite makes it possible to enjoy material and symbolic wealth. The singer and songwriter advocates for culture and development as processes that are necessarily interconnected:

“We can’t allow development that isn’t cultural. And we shouldn’t conceive of a development that isn’t shared.”

Cultural diversity

As a spokesperson for culture, in 2005 he had a key role in creating an international convention that tried to ensure countries had the freedom to articulate their cultural policies.

His policies took into account a respect for differences and a dialogue among cultures through protecting the plurality of origins and languages. In the picture, a meeting with the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan (1997–2006), a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2001.

He claimed that, contrary to a cultural imposition that makes things homogenous, we should value the creations by people from non-hegemonic countries.

When, in 2004, he gave a speech for Peace at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland—in memory of the victims of an attack at the UN headquarter in Bagdad, Iraq—he highlighted the role of cultural diversity in preventing and mediating conflicts. Photo at an event in that same year.

During a speech at the IADB headquarter in Washington, in 2003, he pondered the dangers of simplification in a world that is multiple by nature, and highlighted the immensurable power of the “power plant of signs in each community and all nations,” through its cultural basis.

Digital culture

Gilberto Gil frequently talked about being fascinated by the internet’s capillarity, but always calling attention to the management model—restricted to few. As a speaker, he advocated non-stop for a multilateral, transparent governance in the world web, “reducing the digital abyss among developed and developing countries” through access democratization.

Connected

Besides advocating that technological evolution should benefit people’s well-being, Gilberto Gil was often called upon to explain the world wide web’s reach—the www—and copyrights.

The fight for a more flexible distribution of artistic works and free software positioned the musician as an international advocate for the rights of artists, cultural producers, and common citizens in regard to new media technologies.

In his many debates and colloquiums, he stimulated knowledge circulation as opposed to the world order characterized by the concentration, in very few hands, of economic, financial, and technological resources.

By exposing his preoccupation with the digitally excluded, he fomented the search for innovative products that valued solutions based on alternative licensing models.

Solidary information

In 2017, at a talk show during Brazil Conference at Harvard, he evaluated that the reach of virtual flows require a diverse scientific knowledge, with the contribution also of non-Western systems, opening up more possibilities for technological autonomy.

A witness of the leap between the creation of the personal computer and the internet, Gilberto Gil is a spreader of collective intelligence attached to the world computer network and the importance of collaborative practices through the internet as a strategic public policy.

The country

A nation acknowledged by its peacefulness and cordiality, plus a musician of Gilberto Gil’s magnitude: this opened a path for Brazil to create history. The songwriter and speaker’s creative involvement brought not only music to the world, but the Brazilian soul and wealth.

As councilman or minister, he moved between plenary sessions and movements that looked for the unification of the word and action of society and federal entities in managing cultural policies.

A man of his time, he talks about the importance of a fairer country, so that Brazil can take a stand internationally; he sees new information and communication technologies as crucial tools to economic and social development.

By caring for cultural heritage in its material and intangible aspect, he viewed the power of culture as a means of inclusion. He boosted the country’s autonomy in generating policies to protect national values and cultural identities, linking art, science, and economy.

Brazil is a cradle for the art of the encounter, cultural resistance, and fraternity. He valued national qualities by putting the 2006 World Cup, in Germany, within a cultural programming that mixed the British sport and the Brazilian rhythm, constructed by Indians, blacks, and Europeans.

“We are equal in our enormous differences”

Among the many themes he cares about is the difficulty history has faced in truly rescuing black people’s culture and nature, precisely due to a “reiterated maintenance of their poverty-stricken condition.” It is noteworthy that the anthropocentrism brought on by westernization affects living potentials all over the world and that disparities are fostered by a lack of appreciation for the coexistence of everything and everyone.

Always attentive to quick changes, Gilberto Gil puts his words in motion: “Throughout my life, I carry a preference for what is changeable, for the diverse, and even for the paradox.” By not attaining to the specific, he gives precedence to a broad view. In the shock and harmony of multiple cultures trying to mark their space and connect globally, through his words he spreads tradition and modernity as complementary opposites for cultural progress.
