The Old Town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2006 as an outstanding testimony to the history of mankind. It confirms the extraordinary universal value of this historic cityscape, which deserves to be preserved for the benefit of mankind as a whole.

Since 1945 Regensburg has remained the only large mediaeval city in Germany which is preserved in its entirety and which functions continuously until this very day. Regensburg’s Old Town is an exceptional testimony to cultural traditions during the Holy Roman Empire.

It is also an extraordinary example of a mediaeval centre of trade within Europe, of which the stages of development are still apparent today in its cityscape.

Giant blocks of stone were used to construct this gate in the northern wall of the Roman military camp. It survives as a reminder of Castra Regina, the Roman settlement.

The “Jakobstor” is one of four gothic entrance portals of the medieval city fortification of the 13th century. It is located on the west side of the town.

This Palais was built in 1804 for the representatives of France when they participated at the Perpetual Imperial Diet. Since 2015 the building has had a new public usage for cultural activities as a music and theatre school.

First World Heritage Visitor Centre in Germany

The World Heritage Visitor Centre Regensburg opened in 2011 and introduces visitors of all ages to the attractions, services and unique history of the town.

Modern media installations and interactive displays provide delightful insights into Regensburg’s heritage and spark curiosity to explore the town.

Every year we celebrate the World Heritage Day with a big festival in June. In 2016 the theme was “We are World Heritage: Culture speaks many languages”. Each year we have set another main topic e.g. bridges, churches and religion etc.
