Harbour Scene with Christ Preaching (1598) by Jan Brueghel the ElderOriginal Source: Object in the Online-Collection of the Pinakotheken

Embedded in a landscape that stretches as far as the horizon, the viewer only recognises the scene from the bible on taking a closer look.

In the middle ground Jesus can be seen preaching.

He is surrounded by a large throng of people.

This stands in contrast to the worldly goings-on in the foreground.

From business talks...

...over busy goings-on at the market...

...to the poorest of the poor, who have gathered at a fireplace to barbecue two meagre fish.

Brueghel suggests to the viewer that Christ still bears influence in the world today - he is here, in the world as we know it.
