Poprvé byla opera uvedena ve Výmaru 23. 12. 1893 dirigentem a později světoznámým skladatelem Richardem Straussem. Dílo získávalo větší a větší oblibu a už v roce 1905 bylo uvedeno až za oceánem v newyorské Metropolitní opeře.

The Opera - Premiered in Weimar on 23 December 1893, with Richard Strauss conducting, it was an immediate success, with its popularity growing rapidly, and it soon became a sensation beyond Germany.
