Humble Beginnings

Ralph Irizarry was born on July 18, 1954, in Spanish Harlem to parents from Puerto Rico. He began playing percussion instruments at a very early age and was particularly drawn to the timbales, the one instrument that changed his life forever.

Self-Taught

Self-taught and fueled by an insatiable passion, he honed his rhythmic prowess by immersing himself in his brother's cherished music album and daringly sneaking into nightclubs at the tender age of 16.

A prodigious talent, even as a teenager, Irizarry's family eventually returned to Puerto Rico, where he embarked on his professional journey. There, he cut his teeth with renowned groups like La Terriffica, gracing stages and sharing the limelight with legends such as El Gran Combo, Ruben Blades and Sonora Ponceña, setting the stage for a career that would resonate with the heartbeat of Latin music.

Lane of his own

From his unique solos, clean rolls, and amazing timing, he was truly a master at his craft. Because of his dedication to music and hard work ethic, he started working with Ruben Blades, Ray Barretto, and Celia Cruz amongst other legendary artists.

Irizarry Masterpiece: Creation of Timbalaye

Ralph Irizarry founded Timbalaye in the mid-1990s. The group was conceived as a platform to explore new musical horizons while preserving the essence of Latin rhythms, particularly the vibrant sound of the timbales.

Teaching and Mentorship
