Ingrid KRISTIANSEN

Norwegian athlete Ingrid KRISTIANSEN was one of the top long-distance runners of the 1980s.

Ingrid KRISTIANSEN

After starting her career in cross-country skiing, KRISTIANSEN, born in Trondheim in 1956, ran her first marathon at the age of 21 in 1977. 
And that was just the beginning of a remarkable journey.       

She went on  to win numerous marathons: Stockholm (1980, 1981 and 1982), Houston (1983 and 1984), London (1984, 1985 and 1987), Boston (1986), and New York (1989).

Los Angeles 1984: Ingrid KRISTIANSEN

In the  first-ever women's Olympic marathon on 5 August 1984, despite the sweltering heat of 32 degrees, 44 out of 50 athletes finished the race.

Norwegian athlete Ingrid KRISTIANSEN crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 14 seconds, behind Olympic champion Joan BENOIT (USA), Grete WAITZ (NOR) in second place, and Rosa MOTA (POR) in third.

A new world record from 1985 to 1998

In 1985 she won the London Marathon for the second time in an astonishing 2 hours, 21 minutes and 6 seconds, setting a new world record. She improved on Joan BENOIT's (USA) record from the 1983 Boston Marathon by 1 minute and 37 seconds. Kristiansen's record remained unbeaten for 13 years.

Injured during the 10,000-metre final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Ingrid KRISTIANSEN decided not to participate in the marathon.
