The sculpture garden was built on a natural wetland which was rehabilitated while the museum was under construction. A winding pathway from the atrium leads you to artworks hidden around each corner.

Edoardo Villa was an Italian artist brought to South Africa as a prisoner of war. Constructed from solid 20mm thick steel, this was the largest steel work produced in the continent at the time, and was commissioned for the Rand Easter Show in 1959.
