After atoms had formed, the universe was filled with clouds of hydrogen and helium. Their gravity eventually led them to collapse in on themselves, slowly forming stars and galaxies.

But until the first stars began to shine, the universe was very dark, apart from the faint orange glow the cosmic microwave background.
