Is the Opéra-Comique funny?
No, yes, sometimes. Not everything that is performed is comical and funny. Originally, "opéra-comique" referred to a type of show that mixed sung and spoken theatre. In a way, it is the ancestor of the musical.
But one of the most famous opéra-comique is Carmen, which has a very tragic ending!

Will I understand the show?
Before you enter the theatre:
45 minutes before the performance, the dramaturge will explain everything you need to know about the work and the context of its creation in 15 minutes. On our social networks, we reveal what goes on behind the scenes of our operas.
During the show:
Let yourself be transported by the music and the staging. If required, a screen with surtitles is placed above the stage and projects all the words in French (even though the opera itself is performed in French) and English.
Opera is too expensive
With singers, musicians, sets, costumes... the cost of producing an opera is very high. However, we are keen to offer a range of attractive prices so that we can cater for all types of audience.
That's why we offer reduced prices for those who can't afford to pay the full price:
Young people aged 18-35; families; the unemployed; people on minimum social benefits; people with disabilities; school groups; social groups; discount card holders.
How should I dress?
Three-piece suits and corsets are out, but there's nothing to stop you dressing up for the occasion. Otherwise, jeans and trainers work too! The most important thing is to feel comfortable.
What show will I see?
As its name suggests, the Opéra-Comique stages operas.
But you can also attend concerts, recitals with commentary, events such as youth shows, seminars... and much more!

What do we do during the interval?
Some shows include a 20-minute break, known as an intermission. It's up to you to make the most of this time: there's a bar serving light meals in the Foyer, the social area par excellence.
The Foyer de l'Opéra-Comique is the perfect place to discuss social issues, answer your notifications or meet your soul mate. You can also get some fresh air, but be warned: 20 minutes goes by very quickly! A buzzer will tell you to return to your seats.
How far in advance should I arrive?
Don't hesitate to come 30 minutes before the start of the show for your own comfort. Once there, you can enjoy a drink in the Foyer or soak up the atmosphere. Our reception service is on hand to guide you.
