Veronica Herber, NZ
Auckland based installation artist Veronica Herber is an emerging artist having recently graduated from AUT University with a Bachelor of Visual Arts. Her large tape installations have been shown at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe and Bondi 2014, Sculpture Show at Headland, Sculpture on the Gulf, Waiheke Island NZ 2013 and at Waitakaruru Sculpture Park, Hamilton and Sculpture on the Shore, Davenport NZ. Herber was intrigued with its many qualities and intent on exploring the idea of transforming a banal everyday material into a viscerally potent medium in its own right. The ephemeral quality of such a medium as masking tape explores the tangible and intangible, highlighting the paradox of marking time through a drawn out meditative making process and the sense of immediacy for the viewer. Herber’s volcanic Sculpture Inside works use found volcanic rock. Clothing it in minute washi tape scales, she explores concepts of timelessness and ephemerality, revealing the exquisite in the every day.
Chris Bailey, NZ
Born in 1965, New Zealand, sculptor Chris Bailey is of both Maori and Irish descent with ties to the iwi of Ngati Hako, Ngati Paoa, Te Aupouri and Ngati Porou. Bailey embarked on a journey of discovery in his thirties learning both his Maori language and culture. This involved returning to the various Marae of both his parents and his study at Auckland University where he learnt traditional material working techniques, this learning set him on the path to working full time as a sculptor which he has done since 2004 with much success both nationally and internationally. Bailey lives and works on Waiheke Island just off the coast of Auckland , NZ where he is both a father and sculptor. Bailey has represented NZ on the global stage in the USA, Italy, Australia and Japan and is recognized as one of New Zealand’s leading Maori sculptors in his medium of hard stone and contemporary sculpture.
Hannah Kidd, NZ
Hannah Kidd is an established New Zealand sculptor with a popular following for her inventive and irreverent work. Her sculptures are usually constructed from sections of steel and corrugated iron, welded together to create structures of varying scale from butterflies to polar bears. Kidd has developed a signature style incorporating humour into her sculpture as a vehicle for discussion on the human condition. Animals are often cast as substitutes for their human counterparts in a tableaux of familiar social situations and behaviours. Themes in Kidd’s work revolve around global environmental issues. It is concerned with our changing domestic landscape, and the people and creatures that stereotype our surroundings. Kidd graduated in 2001 from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art, majoring in Sculpture. She has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand. She has exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea in 2007, 2010 and 2011, and in 2009 and 2010 she was selected to exhibit at the international Sculpture by the Sea, in Aarhus, Denmark.
Rebecca Rose, NZ
Rebecca Rose trained initially as a landscape designer. Her love of gardens and outdoor spaces sparked a desire to create art works for these arenas. Training under sculptor Theo Janssen during 1990 and 1993, Rose worked in bronze. A desire to build larger pieces led her to exploring concrete as a medium. From 1995 to 2000 Rose completed five series’ of figurative works in concrete, now found in gardens throughout New Zealand. These include a gathering of nine sculptures at Government House, Wellington, New Zealand. Rose’s recent work has centred on the cyclic nature of life and interconnectedness of humanity. In exploring these themes she has created abstract work using metals and alloys. Rose, partner and their three young children live and work from a dramatic home studio in Titirangi, Auckland, New Zealand. “I am interested in the way light behaves in water and the shadows that come from intricate seaweeds”.
