Explore the Principal Panel in 3D

If you look closely, you will notice that the Principal Panel is home to a wide range of animal species, including birds, turtles, rays, deer, monkeys, lizards, caiman, tapirs, and snakes. This panel is notable for its abundance of painted bats and aquatic birds.

The panel is dominated by striking geometric patterns including matrices (rectangular motifs filled with a variety of designs) as well as large zig-zag, undulating, and ladder-shaped lines.

Curved moon shapes are common on the Principal Panel. Here, four men appear to bend backwards below a downturned crescent moon shape.

Scanning the panel, you may notice the regular layout of the images. They appear to be deliberately arranged in zones or bands, so that both content and layout contribute to the meaning being communicated by the art.
