From people's hunger for culture, the Brasilia Public Library was born.
The first Brasilia Public Library, managed by SECEC-DF, arose from an old demand from the community of Brasilia in the 1990s. The community of Brasilia yearned for culture, books and reading and more than 100,000 signatures were collected in favor of building a library.

From Grocery Store to Library
The creation of the Brasilia Public Library took place by occupying adapted spaces. In a decommissioned building of the old Sociedade de Abastecimento de Brasília - SAB, where there used to be a mini-market, the idea arose to transform the place into a socially-useful cultural resource.

Community strength
The support of the community, local businesses, the librarians and GDF workers, was very important for the revitalization of a space and its transformation into a cultural resource, the Public Library of Brasilia.

Bibliographical Collection
The Library was opened to the public with an initial collection of approximately 1,500 books obtained through donation campaigns carried out in the community. Support in the collection of materials came from Rocan vehicles, which picked up the donated material. The National Book Institute and Editora Universidade de Brasília also supported the Library's collection with their donations.
Children's Collection
The Library has always had a space dedicated to children with a collection of children's books intended only for them, in order to develop the habit of reading from an early age.
First reader
When it opened its doors, the community took over the space and the first users of the Library began to come in.
